Joe Friel Internationally recognized coach, consultant and author of numerous books including The Triathlete’s Bible and The Cyclist’s Training Bible. “I am impressed with how such light weights can have such a significant effect. One can feel it coming out of a downhill or going into an uphill”
Dirk Friel Coach, Pro Rider for 11 years - '07 Colorado State Cat 1 Criterium Champion “I have been testing the Active-Spoke technology for about seven months now and have set my best time using this wheel on the local Wednesday night 10-mile TT series. My best time (22:00) was only 42 seconds slower than Phil Zajicek’s record he set the same night. Only four riders have gone faster than my time (Scott Mononger, Nick Frey 2007 U23-national TT champ, professional Tom Zirbel and Phil Z.). I know I would have gone slower if I did not have the Active wheel, and I also know I can go faster considering I don’t have a TT bike and only have 53 x 11 gearing.”
NOTE: Dirk beat his previous personal best by over 60secs and was 8 seconds behind Nick Frey in that race. With Active-Spoke technology, Dirk enjoyed a 5% improvement over his previous best performance over the same race – a significant accomplishment.
David Jordan, New York, NY NYC Coach, Former US National Team member, Masters National Championship medalist and Cat 1 racer "I have been riding AS modified wheel for almost two months and raced three times in circuit road races that were moderately rolling in terrain. The big efforts were noticed at the bottom of hills and over the crest, whenever momentum was your friend, these little weights that changed their position based on the wheel speed, were definitely noticeably working. I would recommend them to any rider that already climbs reasonably well and would like to gain position more easily as the road begins to turn up, and ...as the road begins to descend. Likewise, the flip side to output, your own energy savings must be significant, helping any athlete do more with less energy input. I think of any time trialer, triathlete and stage racer benefiting even more than the single day rider."
Eric Prager, Syracuse, NY Age Group Triathlete. “... I have rode the same hilly 20 mile course between Camilus and Marcelius for the last 2.5 weeks averaging between 20.5 and 21.7 mph.… set up 4/2 with the pro-set and banged out a smooth 22.9 mph after having run 6.5 miles earlier. Granted it was warmer, but I was also riding on tired legs. “ 05/27/08 - "Russ - Just thought I would update you on my most recent event with the Active Spoke. I competed in Bivalve, Maryland at the Nanticoke Sprint Triathlon and recorded the fastest split at 25.1 mph for the 15 mile course. I went from 26th out of the water (4 minutes behind the leaders) to 1st place on the bike at mile #10. I ended up taking 2nd after losing a shoe in transition and being a mediocre runner, but was thrilled with the overall result and of course the outcome on the bike. I look forward to continued success with the Active Spoke in my next 10 triathlons. Great product!!! "
Randy Fox, Wichita, KS Age Group road racer “…effects of the weights start to be noticeable at about 22 mph, and I can really feel the difference at about 26 mph. The effect kind of reminds me of a heavy, old Hed disc wheel I once owned, in that I can stay on top of the gear easier and not have to downshift as early (if at all) for the little risers. The plus to your system is the acceleration. It feels just like my wheel did before I added the weights, and a hell of a lot better than that old disc!”
David Haward, Draper, UT Coaching Director and Elite road racer “I have the [Active Spoke] kit installed on an Open Pro rim and have used it on a variety of terrain on my TT bike while training. I feel a big advantage when I'm at a good speed accelerating off of the top of a hill. It feels like I need an extra gear on a steeper descent.”
Miscellaneous comments from other Active Spoke users: “…a note to let you know that the PR for my 5.25mile test TT has fallen by 26 seconds with the AS wheel. This is done on a standard road bike in the drops with Velomax Orion II wheels, radial on the non-drive side, running 4 x long and 2 x short weights with Pro springs. " - USAT Certified Coach
"I tried Active Spokes this week and feel a tremendous difference on my normal training circuit. I really feel the difference through the valleys and crests of the hills. I maintain momentum longer..." - Pro Racer and Coach
Testimonials from our users
Matt Migonis, Syracuse, NY Elite Age Group Triathlete - 08 Ford 70.3 Florida - 4:32 "I truly believe in the Active Spoke technology. Two weeks before my first half ironman (Florida 70.3) race I decided to race with Active Spokes and not a rear disk wheel. From my first ride I could tell that I was going up hill and down hill faster and with less effort. Each ride gave me more confidence that I was going to have a good bike leg in Florida. Twenty miles into the bike split of the Half ironman I could tell that I was going to be much faster than my goal of 22 miles an hour. I was rarely out of the aerodynamic position and only got out of my seat twice. While other competitors around me were struggling on the up hills I remained aero and fast. In the end I was pleased to find that I road 11 minutes faster than my goal of 2:30 and I still had legs for the run. (Editor Note: 2:19:32 at 24.1mph average)
I believe that Active Spokes work and I will continue to use them in each of my races. "
Blake Becker Clermont, FL Pro Triathlete, '08 California 70.3 17th Overall- 4:15 finish "I have been using the Active-Spoke technology for 4 months now and I can say without a doubt that this wheel is faster than any other wheel I own on many of my training routes. This technology gives you an advantage that was previously not available. I will be using the Active-Spoke wheels to race and am excited to see the benefits in my results."
Jim Langley - Santa Cruz, CA Bicycle expert, best-selling cycling author, webmaster of bicycle websites www.jimlangley.net and www.jimlangley. blogspot.com, contributing tech editor for www. RoadBikeRider.com, former Bicycling Magazine tech editor and masters road racer. “Having ridden Active Spoke for a couple of months now, I believe this ingenious invention definitely provides an advantage – I just haven’t been able to quantify it yet. My wheels either have a PowerTap or cross spoke patterns so I don’t have a radial pattern available to test it fully. While I did experience noise from the PRO springs during warm-ups (i.e. slow speeds), the Elite Springs were a lot quieter. Overall, Active Spokes are easy to install, comes with excellent documentation and instructions and I can feel that they boost your speed under hard efforts, which offers a nice advantage any racer should appreciate… very interesting product!”
Greg Choat, New York, NY Certified USA Cycling coach and accomplished multisport athlete “...I've now had the system outside for a couple of rides and I'm starting to see the effects on the road. Especially when coming off a hill. During the transition stage from the downhill to the flat I can definitely feel the spokes working as you feel as if you are 'over' the gear for a much longer period of time. I could see using this during attacks off downhills very successfully. When climbing with the wheel up a over grade, say ~2% if you slowly raise your work rate towards the crest of the hill it feels like the wheel wants to continue accelerating as you hit the crest and even continue on the flat before starting downhill again. It makes you feel like you are very powerful …. I feel there is a definite advantage with this wheel when you can keep the pace steady or when you can accelerate it down a hill. It would be very interesting to see what it would be like if I had the strength to go on a solo break for an extended period.”
